OM BHUR BHUVAH SVAH
TAT SAVITUR VARENYAM
BHARGO DEVASYA DHIMAHI
DHIYO YONAH PRACHODAYAT

To chant the Gayatri Mantra purifies the chanter. To listen to the Gayatri Mantra purifies the listener. It is said that this sacred prayer spirals through the entire universe from the heart of the chanter, appealing for peace and divine wisdom for all.

English Translation: The language of the mantra is symbolic and metaphysical, therefore no English translation really does it justice. The meaning of the Gayatri Mantra is experienced through chanting it and blooms in the chanter like a flower - the mantra itself reveals the teachings within it. The two words "Gayatri MMantra" might be translated as: a prayer of praise that awakens the vital energies and gives liberation. Some translations might be:

OM, O Lord! You are the all pervading Source of Light, Sustainer, Protector and Bestower of Happiness, Kindle, Enlighten and inspire our Intelligence to possess Eternal Qualities.

Throughout all of existence "That" essential nature illuminating existence is the Adorable One. May all beings perceive with subtle intellect the magnificent brilliance of enlightened awareness.

God, Thou art the giver of life, the remover of pain and sorrow, the bestower of happiness; O Creator of the Universe, may we receive Thy supreme, sin destroying light; may Thou guide our intellect in the right direction.

The Goddess Gayatri is the mother of the Vedas - the mother of all knowledge, the consort of the God Brahma and also the personification of the omnipresent, supreme, unchanging reality that lies behind all phenomena. Gayatri is typically portrayed as seated on a red lotus, signifying wealth. She appears in either of these forms: Having five heads with the ten eyes looking in the eight directions plus the earth and sky, and ten arms holding all the weapons of Vishnu. These weapons held by the ten hands of Gayatri give divine protection, desired benefit to the devotee, at the same time all the enemies and negative elements working unfavorably against the devotee are destroyed. She is also depicted as the goddess of Education accompanied by a swan, holding a book in one hand and a cure in the other.

The Gayatri Mantra invokes the power and radiance of the Sun to energize all earthly life, to destroy our sins and to reveal the Supreme Self to us. Just like the Sun annihilates darkness, the Gayatri Mantra destroys ignorance. Chanting the Gayatri Mantra influences the physical body, clears the emotional body, and leads one to the inner heart. It is also said to rescue the chanter from all adverse situations that may lead to sickness and death. Reciting the mantra creates a certain rhythm in our breathing which balances the electromagnetic rhythm and energy currents in the body with prana. The Gayatri Mantra is like nourishing food to support our spiritual enlightenment. Chanting the Gaytri Mantra stimulates and facilitates insightfulness and awakens us to Divine Truth.

There was once a time when the Gayatri Mantra was not spoken outwardly, it was repeated only in silence or whispered on the tip of the tongue. There was also a time when women did not chant the mantra. There was also a time when only the Brahmin priests and no others chanted the Gayatri Mantra. As the world has turned towards a darker time known as the Kali Yuga, millions of men and women from around the world are now chanting this mantra.
